The project aimed to regenerate and upgrade Thessaloniki’s axis of the Roman era monuments, to pay homage to this heritage and to bestow pride of place to the prominent archaeological sites of the area. At the same time the study aimed to unify the fragmented urban area and enhance its functionality and aesthetics. Urban space is distinguished by its use of continuous curves and tapering paths which expand into and contrast with wider rest areas. Neatly scattered green spaces serve to further unify the urban site. The result was the creation of an exemplary urban hub that connects the city’s long history with the iconic sea front. The project is a donation by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation to the Municipality of Thessaloniki.
